Talking about sex…
Occasionally, I get a glimpse of how strange my life might appear to be to an outsider if they somehow stumbled upon me and could observe my day-to-day. There was that time I revealed to a friend that although I’m a Reiki Master, I found sex therapy more interesting to talk about, so that’s what I ended up specializing in, post-grad. Also, there is an overlap between understanding energy and understanding sexuality. That is a sweet spot that informs my intuitive work with couples.
Education and learning were necessary to specialize in something, and nothing else could bring me the same satisfaction and impact my clients’ lives as much as sex. I chose the Sexual Health Certificate Program at the University of Michigan, a decision I have never regretted.
So for the second time in a month, I am learning on a weekend. Last. month it was the SSTAR conference in Tampa and today it is an all-day webinar with Stefani Goerlich about working with mixed orientation (KINK & Vanilla) relationships. This is the second webinar I’ve been in this week with Stefani, the first, an “after my therapy day with clients” webinar on KINK with my consultation group with Martha Kauppi.
At lunch break today, I had to make a quick run to Whole Foods. I jumped out of my webinar and into my car. I am currently re-listening to “Mating in Captivity” and it was when Esther Perel’s voice came on that I realized how strange my life might seem to an outsider. Sex, sex, and more sex! The tagline on the SHCP program t-shirt is: “Talking about sex will change the world!” That is so true! Our relationships and quality of life are impacted by sex, and on a grander scale, sex is also a social justice issue.
